Ting Ting Yan student one of 576 chosen to compete in national math competition and the only student from Georgia!
Ting Ting Yan beat almost 50,000 applicants across 43 states to qualify for the Chicago event:
Mableton – A student from Floyd Middle School in Mableton, GA qualified to compete in the National MathCON 2017 Finals. There were approximately 50,000 online round participants from across the country. Ting Ting Yan qualified among the top 1 percent in the country and was invited to Chicago to compete face to face. There were a total of 109 seventh graders who competed for grand champion, gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention recognition. Ting Ting Yan was a winner of this National Championship Honorable Mention Medal. This means she had to finish in the top half of those seventh graders who competed Saturday, April 22. To sum it up, Ting Ting finished in the top half of the top 1 percent of math students from across the country. She was the only student from Georgia participating!! Floyd Middle School, MathCON Sponsors Timothy Coefield and Laura Thomson, and Ting Ting’s Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Xue Yan, are very grateful for the Partners in Education who made this trip possible: Floyd PTSA, Kiwanis of Greater South Cobb, Don Johnson State Farm Agency, Horace Mann/Shawntae Royston, Pace Cetters, Ms. Karen Adkins, Ms. Alicia Gutierrez, Mr. Henry Lust, and Mr. Ray Tiyamiyu. MathCON is a prestigious academic competition hosted by Concept Schools every year in Chicago during April.
