Caring Cardinals

Smitha 6th graders demonstrate caring for peers and school.

Smitha Middle School started a new Peer Helper program exclusively for 6th graders this year called Caring Cardinals.  This group of 30 students, nominated by their teachers for exhibiting outstanding character and leadership skills, have participated in a variety of activities so far this year.

  • They assist new students arriving to Smitha, making them feel welcome.
  • They help in the front of the school in the morning, holding open doors and greeting students and visitors.
  • They serve as book and lunch buddies to students in some of Smitha’s special education classes.
  • And they are tour guides in the spring when rising 5th graders come visit Smitha in preparation for middle school.

Smitha MS is proud of the work these students have done this year and has seen a marked change in the 6th grade’s overall climate with the leadership and social skills this group of Caring Cardinals displays for their peers.

Recently, they came up with the idea of making Valentines for every one of their teachers to thank them and acknowledge the work they do. Then, they grew the idea even bigger to make sure that EVERY 6th grader got a Valentine in their locker on Valentine’s day.  What a great way to make Smitha MS a caring community!
