Nickajack Elementary Infuses Martial Arts, Mentoring into B3: “Be a Better Brave”

Building positive relationships in afterschool activities

Nickajack Elementary School continues to find ways to reach all students through their B3: “Be a Better Brave” initiative. Scott Tasker, a mentor through Cobb Mentoring Matters and owner of North Metro Martial Arts, runs a mentoring group for Nickajack students on Friday afternoons. During this time, martial arts is infused with mentoring as students reflect on how they can be respectful, responsible role models at the beginning of each session and make individual goals based on these conversations. Students are thriving with the structure and consistency that the martial arts mentoring program has provided. Since beginning the mentoring program, students have increased their reading proficiency and improved their overall behavior. Nickajack Elementary continues to make positive school culture and building relationships a priority – a school where student success for all is truly the mantra!
