It’s not just basketball grabbing all of the attention! March is also National Literacy Month, and Cobb County students had such a blast during Read Across Cobb that we decided to extend the read-aloud for the rest of the month (and, of course, we won’t stop there). Even 6-12th students pushed pause for a peaceful moment during hectic days to listen to an engaging story. Author Dave Eggers demonstrated the power of freedom in his text, Her Right Derek Munson’s book, Enemy Pie, reminded us of the friendships that can form when we avoid snap judgements about people. It was a joy to see high school students reminiscing about their favorite books from childhood while learning new life lessons from current texts. Kudos to ELA teachers like Amelia Sanders at Kell who demonstrates the power of the read-aloud every Friday with her class’s “Life Lessons from Pete the Cat,” again proving we’re never too old to enjoy (and learn from!) a good book.
