IWC Language Facilitators recently participated in a training “Interpreting in Special Education Conferences” conducted by Dr. Holly Silvestri of the Atlanta Association of Interpreters & Translators (AAIT). Information presented included special skills required to effectively interpret for special education, as well as the Standards of Practice in this domain. Additionally presented were an overview of Federal laws affecting this process, the different types of situations in which an Interpreter may be called upon to interpret, quality indicators for translation and interpretation in K-12 educational settings, as well as guidelines and resources for recruitment and training practices of Interpreters and Translators.
