Transition Services and Psychological Services Partner to Provide a “Waiver Bee” at Osborne High School.

On August 27, 2019, Transition Services and Psychological Services partnered to provide a “Waiver Bee” at Osborne High School.  The Waiver Bee provides parents of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities help completing the application necessary to receive NOW/Comp Waivers for services after high school.

NOW/Comp Waivers are essential for adults who will need services, such as long-term supported employment and/or group or individual community programs, after exiting high school.  The waiver application process can be overwhelming due to the extensive paperwork and documentation required. Cobb County School District Transition Resource Specialist, Lisa Leiter, coordinated the Waiver Bee event to provide families with the opportunity to get a little extra support with this process.

Dinner for the families and volunteers for the event was generously donated by Mt. Paran Church’s Unlimited Ministry. After dinner, speakers from Parent2Parent of Georgia and The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability (DBHDD) were on hand to provide parents with a greater understanding of what services Medicaid Waivers, such as the NOW/Comp Waivers, can provide after young adults.  In addition to Lisa Leiter; Kelly Buice (CCSD Transition Resource Specialist), Kristin Pewitt (CCSD Transition Coordinator), Tatiana Sosa (CCSD School Psychologist), and Christy Jaffe (CCSD Supervisor, Psychological Services) attended the event to provide families support with completing paperwork and making copies of required documents.

A Transition Talk for Medicaid Waivers is scheduled for November 6, 2019 at Hawthorne Center (1595 Hawthorne Ave, Smyrna) from 5:30 to 7:30 (dinner not provided) if you would like more information on this topic.  Families can also contact their school’s Transition Resource Specialist or the Transition Coordinator for more information.  Contact information and details about upcoming events information about upcoming events can be found on the Transition Services webpage.
