Bringing summer camp to the classroom
Striving readers from 14 Cobb County Schools attended our first ever Summer Literacy Camp held at Smitha Middle School. Students in rising 3rdgrade through rising 8thgrade were provided with transportation, free breakfast and lunch for 4 consecutive weeks while they engaged in reading and learning embedded within the 7 strengths of the social emotional framework. Students were able to prevent summer slide by continuing their reading intervention program over the summer within a camp-like environment. Student gains were abundant, all the while, providing a rich sense of belonging with new friends.
