A teacher at Dowell Elementary has created a great way for students to see which class has read the most books.
Adding excitement and friendly competition to reading has increased the number of books students are reading!
In Ms. Brackett’s Read 180 and System 44 class at Dowell Elementary School, students record their books they are reading in their Reading logs. She also created a magnetic Book Board as an easy visual for everyone. When students finish reading a book on their Lexile level and pass the corresponding Reading Counts quiz with 80% or higher, they move their name magnet to the correct number.
This has created so much excitement around reading and created friendly competition! There is a different color ink on the magnets for each class. Students are easily able to see which class has the most books read. There is another Book Board in the classroom that goes to 100 for when the students need it. Ms. Brackett’s students have passed over 2,300 Reading Counts quizzes from August to December. This is quite an accomplishment! This Book Board has definitely motivated her students to read!
