Fifty three Cobb County School District seniors were recognized by the Georgia Department of Education for their civic engagement work.
Students from nine high schools earned the Civic Engagement Diploma Seal honoring students’ civic knowledge and activities. It is a recognition of merit for students who appreciate the important of serving their community and taking informed action in our democracy.
To earn this prestigious award students fulfilled the Social Studies requirement to earn a high school diploma, passed a test on American government, completed 50 hours of community service including 15 hours of civic engagement activities, and completed a Capstone Portfolio Presentation on the knowledge and skills they gained from completing the requirements for the Civic Engagement Diploma Seal.
IN A CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY, productive civic engagement requires knowledge of the history, principles, and foundations of our American democracy, and the ability to participate in civic and democratic processes. People demonstrate civic engagement when they address public problems individually and collaboratively and when they maintain, strengthen, and improve communities and societies. Civics is not only the study of how people participate in governing society, but also encompasses participation in classrooms, schools, neighborhoods, groups, organizations, and government institutions.” – College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework, National Council for the Social Studies | ![]() |

Kell High School students organized a voter registration drive last fall. A voting registration drive is a powerful example of what students can do to get their peers involved in civics. Kell students registered over 70 new voters.
