Cobb school library media specialists partner with Cobb public librarians to keep students reading.
With a shared goal of providing books to students and families, Cobb school library media specialists and Cobb public librarians came together to brainstorm creative solutions.
Over the summer, library media specialists Sandra Davis at Smitha Middle School and Karii Zimmerman at Garrett Middle School, along with middle school reading teacher Jaime Williams at Lost Mountain Middle School, started thinking about how to make sure all Cobb County students have access to print books as digital learners at home. These three educators were equally concerned about screen fatigue and equitable access to resources. A few brainstorming sessions led to a new collaboration with the Cobb County Public Library (CCPL). In the past, the CCPL Bookmobile has only been used for events directly connected to the public library, but everyone saw the potential in this new collaboration. The plan was simple: collect donated books and distribute them to neighborhoods throughout the district using the CCPL Bookmobile.
Ms. Davis, Ms. Zimmerman, and Ms. Williams got to work organizing book drives and picking up donations around town. After the books were collected, they were sorted according to interest level. By the end of summer, almost 2,500 books had been collected. The next step was finding locations that could safely accommodate distribution. A schedule was set for distribution on Wednesdays in local neighborhoods and at schools.
The first distribution was on Wednesday, September 23rd. Ms. Davis and members of the Cobb Public Library Bookmobile Team visited three neighborhoods in the Smitha Middle School district. Strict safety protocols were followed, and everyone, from babies to grandparents, found books that they love! The team continues to collect donations and plan for future distributions to keep our Cobb community reading.
