Helping Families Grow Their Literacy and Math Skills.
Parental involvement is key in ensuring students’ academic success. In order to meet the needs of our school community, Birney Elementary is collaborating with Northwest Exterminating to launch Literatura, a drive-through bilingual family literacy program.
While COVID-19 has changed how we are able to interact with our community, Birney’s Academic Coaches Katherine Stieber and Michelle Mullinax, collaborated with the Northwest Exterminating Good Deeds Team to bring to life Literatura, a drive-through bilingual family literacy program.
Literatura will take place bi-monthly and continue in a drive-through format to ensure the safety of the volunteers as well as the Birney school community. Each student will be able to pick up a free, grade-level activity bag which contains reading, math, science, and arts integration activities that reinforce or extend current grade-level standards. Included in the bags are all the materials needed such as game boards, popsicle sticks, dice and more. Every family also receives a bilingual picture book to encourage family togetherness by reading together.
The first successful Literatura event was held on the evening of October 8th, 2020 and attended by 80 Birney families.
