When all students were learning virtually, Nancy Cobelli was looking for a way to stay in touch with her students and provide them with something fun and active to do while at home.
Nancy realized she was on to something when parents and students would comment that they looked forward to the Brain Boosters.
When all students were learning virtually, Nancy Cobelli was looking for a way to stay in touch with her students and provide them with something fun and active to do while at home. This sparked the creation of brain booster videos. Once synchronous instruction was implemented, Nancy continued to create brain booster videos using teachers to demonstrate the activities and posted them via Twitter and the school PTA page to try something new and fun! Nancy realized she was on to something when parents and students would comment that they looked forward to the Brain Boosters.
Nancy has been at Big Shanty for 13 years and has been a part of many programs designed to enhance fitness and well-being. These include running Clubs, Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart, yearly field day, “Eat This Not That” monthly broadcasts on Big Shanty’s school news show. Nancy also helped Big Shanty receive the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Bronze School Award. In addition, she gives quarterly grade level GYM GEMS award for students who consistently show effort, kindness, respect, and a great attitude in P.E.
Nancy partners with other departments to provide support and school incentives such as school wide P.B.I.S. eagle buck earners, monthly staff wellness walks, monthly staff Fruity Friday breakfasts, informational monthly wellness bulletin boards, student wellness walks, and Strong 4 Life by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Last year, Nancy started a “Take your Parent to P.E.” in 3rd grade with hopes of expanding. These incentives have made the Big Shanty team closer, improved morale amongst the staff and students!
One of Nancy’s favorite quotes is from President John F. Kennedy: “Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.” Nancy Cobelli instills a love of movement, confidence which supports a Fit for Life mentality not only for students, but her colleagues as well. Thank you, Nancy for shining your light on our students, staff and community!
