Dr. Craig Hurley is GMEA’s Educator of the Year for 2021.
CCSD has another shining star to showcase! Dr. Craig Hurley, the K-5 General Music specialist at Ford Elementary School, has recently been recognized as the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) Educator of the Year!
The selection for this award is quite exclusive and a coveted honor amongst music educators, and we are pleased to say this award is quite deserved by Dr. Hurley.
He has presented sessions at the Music Educators Association in-service conferences for Georgia (2011, 2019), Florida (2012), and Alabama (2013) as well as the Georgia ACDA (2018) Southern Division ACDA Conference (2020). Under his direction, the Ford Elementary Chorus has performed with the Atlanta Women’s Chorus, the Kennesaw State University Women’s Choir, and the 2015 GMEA In-Service Conference. He has supervised student teachers from Shorter College, Berry College, and Kennesaw State University. Dr. Hurley was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2002 and 2016.
Dr. Hurley is the conductor of the Spivey Hall Young Artists, the preparatory choir of the nationally renowned Spivey Hall Children’s Choir. The Young Artists were proud to perform at the 2018 GMEA In-Service Conference in Athens, Georgia. Dr. Hurley has served as a guest clinician for several honor choirs including the 2015 Georgia ACDA Treble Honor Choir and the 2011 & 2019 GMEA Statewide Elementary Honor Choir. He currently serves as the Georgia ACDA R&R Chair for Children’s Choirs. He is the artistic director of the annual Spivey Hall Summer Music Camp and Spivey Hall Elementary Honor Choir.
Dr. Hurley’s research article Examining the Effect of Aural Preparation on Second Grade Students’ Music Literacy Rhythm Skills can be found in the 2018 edition of Research and Issues in Music Education. Research interests include music literacy and expressive choral performance pedagogy.
Dr. Hurley holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Shorter College, a Master’s of Early Childhood Education from Berry College, and a doctorate in music education from The University of Georgia.
