Parents of students with disabilities benefit from district resources.
Sharing resources and strategies to assist parents of students with disabilities is a primary goal of Cobb’s Special Education Parent Mentors, who not only maintain their own website chock-full of this information but also point parents to other resources within the district and the community itself.
Parent Mentors Stacy Greene and Antoinette Nichols continue to build their Presentation Library on their website (www.cobbk12.org/specialeducationparentmentors) and have just loaded “Math Word Problems Explained” facilitated by Schona Jones-Lewis, Program Support Specialist. Future presentations to be loaded this school year will address such topics as the IEP process, communication strategies, and independence-building.
“Because we are in the ‘business’ of sharing resources, we also connect parents to departments within the district that are providing valuable information,” says mentor Stacy. For example, CCSD’s Instructional Technology Department website includes an updated Microsoft 365 Support page at: www.cobbk12.org/page/38400/microsoft-365-support. Parents can click on the “Accessibility Tools” tab on the page’s left side to learn about a multitude of embedded features to assist their students.
Mentor Antoinette can attest to the value of the “Accessibility Tools” information. “I learned so much that could help my middle school student, like the Immersive Reader and Dictate options,” she says. “There are so many tools that could be useful for many of our CCSD families.”
Please be sure to check out these resources and all others that are posted on the mentors’ website. And, don’t forget to complete the “Georgia Department of Education’s FY21 Parent Survey” for parents of students with an IEP; this survey was sent via email to your email/CTLS app on January 26 but is also included here for your convenience: https://survey.gadoe.org/SPEDParentSurvey.
